New bill aims to help female inmates victimized by prison guards

New California legislation is aiming to help female inmates who are sexually assaulted by prison and jail guards behind bars.

The state Assembly Public Safety Committee approved SB 898, authored by Sen. Nancy Skinner (D-Berkeley), this week. SB 898 was introduced by Skinner in response to ongoing sexual abuse inside California women’s prisons.

A federal women’s prison in Dublin, nicknamed the “rape club,” was abruptly closed this year after the FBI uncovered a wide-ranging sex abuse scandal and seven  employees were convicted in court.
