Garofoli: Are Californians’ abortion rights really safe? One case from Texas is a warning

State Sen. Nancy Skinner, D-Berkeley, the head of the Legislative Women’s Caucus and a driving force behind many of California’s abortion rights protections, said legislators have passed more than two dozen laws attempting to clear up those abortion gray areas over the past two years.

But Cox’s case highlights the complexity of California’s challenge.

“As long as you are operating in California and physically in California, we have protected you,” Skinner said. “But what’s pretty close to impossible to do is protect you if you go to Texas. If you’re standing in Texas and Texas has documentation that you violated the law and they decide they want to prosecute you, that is much harder for us to protect.”
