Senator Nancy Skinner Applauds Governor Newsom’s First Budget Proposal

Today, State Senator Nancy Skinner (D-Berkeley), issued the following statement:

“As I expected Governor Newsom stepped in from day one with his hand on the pulse of the need for a fiscally sound but also responsive state budget. Any thought that our new Governor would not be paying attention to the bottom line was countered today. The budget presented is structurally balanced for the next 4 years, adds to both our rainy day reserve and our safety net reserve, pays down both teacher and state worker pension debt while providing legitimate increases that expand education opportunities and help lift Californians out of poverty.

“As a product of California’s public education system, I am pleased to see education for every Californian, 0 – to adult, increased in this budget. The increases to CSU and UC are especially welcomed and so needed.

“As Chair of the Senate’s Public Safety Committee and the Budget Sub that oversees all of the state’s expenditures related to criminal justice and public safety, I applaud the proposal to shift the Division of Juvenile Justice from CDCR to Health and Human Services. I look forward to the emphasis on treatment for these young people, as opposed to punishment without opportunity.

“I am excited to work with my legislative colleagues, the Governor and his staff in vetting these budget proposals and ensuring that we continue to make California a better place to live, work, do business and raise a family and reflect the needs and desires of the residents of SD9 and all Californians.”
