Updates on Proposed Elections Legislation
Greetings!
In the coming days, the Legislature will be considering legislation that includes a state constitutional amendment to set a special election on November 4, and makes public, for all voters to see and review, new proposed Congressional maps for California.
I have the great responsibility and honor as your State Senator to diligently and faithfully pursue policies that will best serve our community. Throughout my life and career, I have been guided by my commitment to be fair and respectful of my neighbors and to respect the rule of law. This often means putting aside personal differences, partnering with colleagues across the aisle, and finding compromise when it best serves our communities. However, I will not compromise when it comes to our Democracy and protecting fair and free elections in our state and nation.
The mid-decade redistricting efforts directed by the federal administration being conducted by other states undermines these values by pursuing power for power’s sake rather than pursuing policies that Americans need and want. This is why I’ve joined California Democrats in putting forth a measure to counter these undemocratic gerrymandering efforts. And unlike in other states, it will be the People of California that will have the final say on the matter at the ballot box.
This proposal maintains California’s long-term commitment to national redistricting reform by retaining our state’s Citizen Redistricting Commission for the regular redistricting after the 2030 census and declaring it state policy to support the use of fair, nonpartisan redistricting commissions nationwide.
We are in unprecedented political times, and in California we will always meet the moment to protect our values and our elections.
The proposed maps are now publicly available on the Assembly Elections Committee website.
Californians can also provide input on the map via a public portal on the same website, which has already received more than 3,000 in the first days after its launch.
You can also provide your comments to me directly via my website.
It is my honor to serve you.
