Please join me tonight, Dec. 14, at 7 p.m., for a festive celebration honoring a few outstanding women and women-led organizations in Senate District 9. You can watch the celebration on my Senate website.
The virtual celebration will honor these phenomenal women:
- 2020 Woman of the Year: Jamie Almanza, Exec Director, BACS, Bay Area Community Services
- Women in California Leadership Scholarship Winners: Marciela Rodrigues, Shani Shay, and Daniela Medina. All three are Underground Scholars at UC Berkeley. Marciela Rodriguez is also first-generation, low-income, Latinx STEM scholar and Berkeley Hope Scholar. Shani Shay is founder of the college outreach program, Incarceration to College. And Daniela Medina is a Young Professionals of Color Fellow with the National Institute for Criminal Justice Reform and a Latinx Center of Excellence Scholar
- Women in California Leadership Community Organization Grantee Award: Young Women's Freedom Center
- Dr. Noha Aboelata, CEO and founder of Roots Community Health Center, 2020 Nonprofit of the Year for District 9.
We'll also enjoy entertainment from Eleanor Wikstrom, 2019 Youth Vice Poet Laureate for Oakland, and Adora Nzewi, a young East Bay actress and entertainer.
